
December 4th was quite an eventful day as far as the history of music was concerned. Here, we bring to you some of the more memorable events that went by on this day over the years.
This day in 1956 witnessed the impromptu but successful jam session that was held at Sun Record Studios in Memphis, Tennessee. The session that consisted of the celebrated musicians Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash went famous by the name “Million Dollar Quartet.”
On December 4th 1971, Led Zeppelin soared to the No.1 spot on the U.K. album chart with their fourth studio album Led Zeppelin IV. Produced by Jimmy Page, the album had a week’s stay on the U.S. album chart. The album was a worldwide commercial success with a total sale of more than 11 million copies. The album features the band’s key song Stairway to Heaven, among other famous hits such as Rock and Roll, Black Dog and Misty Mountain Hop.
This day in 1980 saw the beginning of the famous American singer Prince’s Dirty Mind Tour that was held in North America. The tour included 31-night’s performances that were conducted at Shea’s Buffalo in Buffalo, New York. Prince’s manager forbid Prince from wearing spandex pants excluding underwear during the performance. Hence, Prince performed on stage sporting just a long trench coat, black boots with high heels, leggings and bikini briefs.
In 1988, Roy Orbison, also known as The Big O, performed in Cleveland, Ohio. This was Orbison’s last ever performance, as he passed away on December 6th 1988, just two days after his gig. Orbison was 52 years old when he had a heart attack and passed away.
This day celebrates the birth of Jay-Z who was born in 1969. Also celebrating his birthday on December 4th is Gary Rossington who was born in 1951.
