
The second day of the New Year brings with it some great memories from the past, some happy, some sad, and some historic. In this episode of This Day in Music History, we bring to you some of the most prominent events that have gone down in the history of music. As usual, it’s an interesting mix!
On this day in 1968 New Jersey authorities detained the entire shipment of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s first album Two Virgins. The reason for the shipment hold-up was the controversial cover of the album that exhibited a picture of Lennon and Ono’s full frontal nudity. In due course, the albums were allowed to go through. However, record stores were instructed to wrap the albums in plain brown paper.
On this day in 1988, King of Pop, Michael Jackson and U2’s frontman Bono split the award for first place for the title of ‘The Most Beautiful Lips.’ Both legendary artistes delivered a verbal vote of thanks to the American poll for picking them as the winner.
On January 2nd 2003, 50 Cent was arrested by the police on account of possession of guns in his SUV vehicle. The rapper’s vehicle had been abandoned in a no-parking zone and was picked up by the police. After searching the vehicle, the police discovered 2 loaded guns, a .25-calibre handgun and a .45-calibre pistol, leading to Cent’s arrest.
This day in 2008 witnessed the success of 26-year-old Josh Groban when he was chosen as the top selling artist of 2007 in America. Groban is famous for his hit track You Raise Me Up. Groban’s Christmas compilation, Noël, was voted the best-selling album with a total sale of almost 3.7 million copies. 2007’s second best seller was Disney’s High School Musical 2 movie soundtrack. The Eagles had a total sale of 3.58 million album copies, making them the best-selling group of 2007.
