On this day in 1964, I Want To Hold Your Hand by The Beatles hit the No.45 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. This was the band’s first track to enter the U.S. singles’ chart. It was released just ten days prior to its chart success, thus making this track the fastest selling track by Capitol Records. The song later went on to have a seven week stay at the No.1 spot on the chart.
This day in 1965 witnessed the recording of The Rolling Stones’ The Last Time and Play With Fire. The recording took place at the RCA Studio in Hollywood, California, where Phil Spector played the acoustic guitar during the recording of the track Play With Fire.
On January 18th 1989, Stevie Wonder was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was only 38 years old at the time, making him the youngest person alive to be inducted. The induction ceremony was held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York and was attended by some of the other inductees comprising of The Rolling Stones, Otis Redding, The Temptations and Dion DiMucci.
This day in 2010 witnessed the sad demise of the famous Canadian folk singer Kate McGarrigle. McGarrigle was part of the singing duo Kate and Anna McGarrigle, who basked in the glory of success during the 70s’. Kate was 63 years old when she died of cancer at her home in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She was married to Loudon Wainwright III and became the mother of singers Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright, before her marriage ended in a divorce. Kate and Anna McGarrigle’s songs have been covered by celebrated artists including Emmylou Harris, Billy Bragg, Judy Collins, Kristy McColl and Elvis Costello.
