Each day in music history has its share of good news and bad news and March 5th hasn’t been any different. Over the years, several events have gone down on this day, some happy, some sad, and some downright quirky too. Here, we bring to you some of the events that top the list.
A DJ from Kansas City had died in a car accident and Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkins performed at a concert held in his memory, the proceeds of which were to go to the DJ’s widow. In a rather tragic turn of events on this day in 1963, all three artists met their own end while returning from the concert, in a gruesome plane crash.
Michael Jackson was given the title of King of Pop for a reason, and even today, thousands of his fans swear by his music. On this day in 1983, Jackson’s hit track Billie Jean made it to the top of the US singles charts where it would stay for seven weeks. Simultaneously, Jackson’s Thriller album too hit the UK album chart running, making it all the way to the No.1 spot. Thriller eventually sold more than 50 million copies, making it the highest selling album of all time.
MC Hammer was one of the most successful artists of his time who simply couldn’t hold on to his wealth, which at one time had amounted to a glitzy $50 million. After declaring bankruptcy in 1996, Hammer took on the role of Jubilee Christian Center preacher in the year 2000 in San Jose.
Ozzy Osbourne and his family members are well known for their over-the-top antics and in 2002, a reality show based on the Osbourne family hit the MTV airwaves. The show had all the drama one could ask for, with plenty of fights, cursing and the works!
The National Recordings Registry is a venerated collection of historic works, maintained with an aim to make sure that the best works of a generation are preserved so that coming generations may partake of it. On this day in 2007, Paul Simon’s Graceland and The Rolling Stones’ Satisfaction were chosen to enter this esteemed registry.
