
A few days in music history are clearly more interesting than the others. Here, we bring to you some of the most important events that went down on November 25th across the years. And just like music, these events too have their sad and happy notes!
This day in 1976, witnessed the last and final performance of the famous Canadian-American rock band, The Band. This farewell concert is better known by the name The Last Waltz, which was also the name of the documentary film, by Martin Scorsese, based on the story of The Band’s coming together and falling out. The concert also featured performances by Van Morrison, Dr. John, Neil Diamond, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton and many more.
Member of The Beatles’ band, John Lennon protested against the Vietnam war, by returning his MBE to the Queen on November 25th 1969. Lennon notified the Queen, the then prime minister Harold Wilson and the secretary of the Central Chancery, by sending them handwritten letters. The letters confirmed that Lennon returned his MBE in an act of protest against the Vietnam War, the support of America in Vietnam and the slipping down of his track, Cold Turkey, from the singles chart.
This day in 1984 witnessed the who’s who of the British pop music industry get together at the SARM West Studios in Notting Hill, London. The gathering occurred for the recording of Do They Know It’s Christmas?, a song written by Midge Ure and Bob Geldof. Featuring Paul Young, Nick Rhodes, Bono, Sting, Boy George and George Michael, the super-group called themselves ‘Band Aid.’
On this day in 2000, rocker Alice Cooper’s Paradise Valley home was reportedly burgled and the thief fled away with over $6,000 in shoes, clothes and video cameras that belonged to Cooper’s daughter. The burglar also carried away four of Cooper’s gold records.
This day also celebrates the birth of guitarist Steve Rothery and R&B singer Jocelyn Brown.
