December 30: This Day in Music History

You may think that the musical calendar would have slowed down only a day before the end of the year. Well, it is quite the opposite actually! Plenty of memories have gone down music history’s lane on December 30th, although it’s the closest day to the last day of the year, and here, we bring to you some of the most interesting on the list.

The famous Russian composer Dmitri Borisovich Kabalevsky was born on this day in 1904, in Saint Petersburg. On this day in 1962, celebrated vocalist Brenda Lee and her family had to be evacuated from her home in Nashville, Tennessee, as it caught fire due to some malfunction with an electrical appliance. The interior of Lee’s $24,250 home was completely destroyed in the fire.

This day in 1979 witnessed the splitting of the English trio rock group Emerson, Lake & Palmer. The three member band, consisting of keyboardist Keith Emerson, vocalist, producer and guitarist Greg Lake and drummer Carl Palmer; split up after the release of their seventh studio album Love Beach, in November 1978.

On December 30th 1999, The Beatles’ member George Harrison and his wife Olivia Harrison were assaulted by a psychotic thief, Michael Abrams, who broke into their home. Abrams stabbed Harrison four times in the chest. However, Harrison, along with his wife was still able to restrain Abrams till the police arrived and arrested the assailant.

On this day in 2002, 58-year old Diana Ross was arrested in Tucson, Arizona, by the police as she was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. Not the tune you would expect from an artist of her caliber!

This day celebrates the birth of Yens Vidabek. Also celebrating her birthday on December 30th is Ellie Goulding who was born in 1986.
