December 31: This Day in Music History

It’s New Year’s Eve! And while us common folk are busy getting ready for parties that would ring in the New Year, the musical fraternity sure didn’t believe in taking a breather even on the last day of the year!

Plenty of interesting events went down on December 31st, and here, we bring you the best of the lot!

This day in 1969 witnessed the introduction of Jimi Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys Fillmore East rock performance venue in New York City. The group, consisting of Jimi Hendrix, bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles, performed on January first. This show was recorded and released as a live album by the name Band Of Gypsys.

31st December 1970 saw The Beatles at their lowest point, when Paul McCartney filed a lawsuit at London’s High Court, in an attempt to dissolve the partnership created by The Beatles’ band.

On this day in the year 1975, King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley created history with his performance at the Silverdome stadium in Pontiac, Michigan. Presley performed before a fan base of 60,000 fetching him a total earning of $800,000. This became a world record for the highest amount of revenue earned from a single concert by one artist alone.

This day in 1976 witnessed the debut performance by the rock band, The Cars at the Peace Air Force Base in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Two years later, in 1978, Rolling Stone magazine readers voted The Cars as the Best New Artist.

On this day in 1978, the English gothic rock group, Bauhaus had their debut performance at the Cromwell Pub in Wellingborough, England.

In 1981, music channel MTV hosted and aired their debut New Year’s Eve Rock ‘N’ Roll Ball. The ball was held in the Grand Ballroom of Hotel Diplomat in New York City and was aired live on MTV.

Drummer Rick Allen from Def Leppard lost his left arm after he was involved in an auto accident in England, on this day in 1984.

On December 31st 1985, a fire started on the plane in which Ricky Nelson and six others were traveling. The plane crashed near DeKalb, Texas, killing the seven passengers on board.

This day celebrates the birth of singer Donna Summer. Also celebrating his birthday on 31st December is South Korean sensation and Gangnam Style singer, PSY.
