January 10: This Day in Music History

On this day of the music calendar, everyone from The Beatles to Cyndi Lauper to others like Jerry Wexler and Donald Fagen made some news or the other. Here, we bring you all the interesting tidbits that make January 10th yet another exciting day in the history of music!

This day in 1965 witnessed The Beatles’ member, John Lennon make an appearance on the UK TV Peter Cook and Dudley Moore show, Not Only… But Also.

This day witnessed the sad demise of Chester Burnett, better known as Howlin’ Wolf. Burnett was 66 years old when he died of cancer in 1976. Burnett has been ranked No.51 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. The multitalented musician has numerous hit tracks to his credit including Killin’ Floor, Smoke Stack Lightning, Little Red Rooster and Spoonful.

This day in 1984 witnessed Cyndi Lauper get nominated for five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, Best New Artist, Best Pop Vocal Performance (Female), Record of the Year and Song of the Year. This made Lauper the first female recording act, after 1967’s Bobbie Gentry, to be nominated for five Grammys.

This day celebrates the birth of a number of musicians: Jerry Wexler, who was born in 1917. Wexler was Atlantic Records’ producer and co-owner. He worked with artists such as Ray Charles, Phil Spector, Dr. John, Lieber and Stoller and Dusty Springfield. Rod Stewart, who was born in 1945. Stewart is well-known as the member of bands such as Steampacket, The Faces and The Jeff Beck Group, before he decided to start his solo career.

Another musician born on this day in 1948 is musician and songwriter, Donald Fagen. Fagen is a Grammy Award winner and has had a number of Top 30 singles to his credit. Finally on January 10th 1953 is the four-time Grammy Award winner, Pat Benatar. Benatar is also celebrated for her hit track Hit Me With Your Best Shot.
